CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

This year's Emergencies in Primary Care conference is designed to provide physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses involved in primary care with evidence-based information on commonly encountered office and hospital emergency dilemmas and suggest current approaches to clinical management. In addition to didactic lectures, ample time has been allotted for participant feedback and interaction during the question and answer sessions.

Content for this year's conference has been selected based on past participant requests, clinical expert input, as well as our online needs assessment surveys of primary care and emergency medicine health care professionals.

Our outstanding faculty has been selected based on their individual areas of expertise, their ability to communicate first-hand knowledge to others, and their commitment to address issues of current concern to attendees.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

After participating in this conference, you should be able to...

Identify current treatment options for emerging infections including MRSA

Describe the presentation and intervention of common orthopedic emergencies such as fractures; knee, ankle or shoulder injuries; and low back pain

Define and better treat and manage fever

Cite the pathophysiology & etiology of syncope and distinguish who needs admission and who does not

Incorporate findings of recent toxicology literature into your practice

Cite appropriate standards of care for the treatment of emergencies in the elderly

Evaluate chest pain in the primary care setting; review assessment and appropriate diagnostic options, evaluate treatment strategies and timely follow-up

Better diagnose, treat and predict the prognosis of COPD

Discuss disaster management in a primary care practice through lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina

ACCREDITATION

This educational activity was planned and produced in accordance with the ACCME and ANCC essentials and standards relating to continuing medical and nursing education.

Symposia Medicus is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Symposia Medicus is accredited as a provider of continuing education for nurses by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).

Each participant should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Certificates of completion/credit will be given to participants on-site at the conclusion of the conference.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT

Physicians
Symposia Medicus designates this educational activity for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Application for Prescribed CME credit has also been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Application has been made to the American College of Emergency Physicians for ACEP Category I credit.

Physician Assistants
The Academy of Physician Assistants accepts Category 1 CME approval from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

Nurse Practitioners/Nurses
The ANCC contact hours awarded for the completion of this educational activity is twelve (12). Provider is also approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP2335, for 14.4 contact hours.

Pharmacology Credit for Prescriptive Authority
A maximum of 2.75 hours in pharmacology credit for prescriptive authority may be earned by attending this educational conference. Sessions awarding pharmacology credit for prescriptive authority are denoted with an Rx in the schedule.

Each registrant will receive an extensive conference syllabus containing pertinent information on each topic presented. In an effort to reduce the environmental impact of printing on paper, this syllabus is now available on CD. You can request your syllabus on CD on our conference registration form. If you do request a syllabus on CD and bring your laptop to the conference, please be aware that there are no electrical outlets at the conference tables. Make sure your laptop is fully charged.
